Felix Jones Out Two Weeks

Black Injury Monday continutes…

Rookie running back Felix Jones will miss two weeks according to Mickey Spagnola.

Michael Strahan Says No To Big Blue

I guess the New York Giants didn’t want to pay enough money to get Michael Strahan out of retirement.  Actually, it wasn’t about the money, but Strahan told Foxsports.com he didn’t want to play.

The Giants tried to lure him out of the Fox Sports booth since they lost defensive end Osi Umenyoria for the season.

That’s good news for Cowboys tackles Marc Colombo and Flozell Adams.

Strahan told Jay Glazer:

“This has been one of the toughest nights of my life,” Strahan said from Greece. “But after long deliberation and throwing around a million scenarios in my head for the past day, I think it’s just best if I stay retired.

“I have gone back and forth on this because as a player you’ll always want to play, you’ll never lose that urge to be out there. But I could only do this if I could commit 100 percent, physically, mentally, emotionally and I can’t do that. I’ve tried to convince myself and my body to give it one more year, but in the end I just don’t think I could turn it on like I need to again.”

Strahan and the team held discussions and he says the money was enough to do the deal. But in the end, it became a matter of whether or not he wanted to put his body through the rigors of another NFL season.

Cowboys Still Checking Out Chris Simms

Brad Johnson’s average performance against the Chargers is what it is.  I don’t think he should be cut, but the Cowboys need to bring in another option because Rich Bartel is not.

The St. Pete Times said the Cowboys had a scout at the Bucs-Dolphins game to scout Chris Simms.

The Bucs may want a 5th rounder for the former Texas quarterback.

If they made that trade I can’t see Simms getting enough of the Cowboys offense down to be the #2 right away, but maybe by October he could have 80% of it down if he had to play.

Brett Favre Is A New York Jet

Jay Glazer of Foxsports.com reports Brett Favre is a N.Y. Jet.

The Packers have officially moved on.

If the Jets release quarterback Chad Pennington I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cowboys try to make a play for him.  I know the Chiefs would be thriled to have Pennington since he played for Herm Edwards in New York.

The Jets don’t play Green Bay this year.

Earthquake Shakes Up My Interview

I was doing a sit down interview at Cowboys Camp in Oxnard, California ,with Cowboys Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams and an earthquake hit.

I felt my chair rocking back and forth.  I thought maybe one of the players got behind me and was shaking my chair.

As we are taping Roy says, “You feel that earthquake?”

I said yeah and Roy replied, “That’s a tremor…an earthquake.”

T.O. came running out of his room and said, “Y’all feel that?”   Tony Romo walked past us and talked about it.   So did other players like Jason Witten and Brad Johnson.

It was a 5.4 earthquake on the Ritcher scale.  Roy broke it down for us because he is from Northern California.

I didn’t freak out because I used to live in Los Angeles so I was cool.  Been there, done that. My photographer Noah Bullard had never been through one.  He acted like he just kissed a girl for the first time.  He was all excited.

I will have video of this Earthquake Interview tonight at 5 and 6 PM on NBC 5 News.   I’ll even do something at 10 PM.

I Roast Bill Parcells

Check out my Saturday column in the Star-Telegram.  I roast Bill Parcells for laying the blame on Tony Romo as the reason his quit coaching.

It’s typical garbage from Parcells.  He is a big baby.  He was a good football coach but he’s not a very nice guy.  I think he’s a selfish bastard to tell you the truth.

He never won a playoff game or a NFC East title in his tenure in Dallas.

Bring Back Brett Favre Website

The folks in Wisconsin want Brett Favre in a Packers uniform this fall playing quarterback, not Aaron Rodgers.

There is a website for those who want him around.  www.bringbackbrettfavre.com.

The Cowboys play in Green Bay September 21st.  Tony Romo of the Cowboys is from Wisconsin.

Jessica Simpson Meets Tony’s Parents at Olive Garden

The romance continues.   Do your thing Tony Romo!!  The Cowboys quarterback is kicking it in Wisconsin until training camp starts later this month in California.

The Tony N Jess love affair goes on strong.  People magazine reports Romo parents meet her at Olive Garden.  They report:

Perhaps bread sticks soothe nerves?Jessica Simpson, 27, met beau Tony Romo’s parents on June 27, when all of them had dinner at an Olive Garden in Janesville, Wisc.

Romo, 28, who grew up in nearby Burlington, was home to play in a golf tournament.

But making a reservation at the Olive Garden surprised even the restaurant’s general manager. “We thought it was a big joke,” said Doug Belfanz. “Jessica Simpson’s not going to the Olive Garden in Janesville, Wisconsin!”

Personally, I really like Joan and Ramiro Romo. I got to meet them last year in San Antonio.  His folks are good peeps.

Julius Jones Sounds Bitter In Seattle

The Cowboys let running back Julius Jones leave this offseason.   The Seahawks picked him up and Jules sounds all bitter, “Things changed, and they wanted to go in a different direction,” he said. “There was no explanation, and I didn’t ask. It was just time for me to go.”

I Just Talked To Avery Johnson

The Mavs coach was on his way home to the Woodlands when we spoke by phone.

Avery Jr. was taken off on a stretcher.  He was playing football at school and got hurt.   He wanted to check in on his kid.  That is more important than having a press conference with the DFW media.

He will meet with the media tommorrow at 11am.

Avery was not mad.  “It’s time,” he said without any anger in his voice.    The 2006 NBA Coach of the Year will walkaway with over 12 million in pay.  Mavs owner Mark Cuban has to pay a lot of money to make him go away.

Johnson told me he did not want to make it battle of words with Cuban.  He said he wasn’t angry.  He will be interested to see what the next coach does.

Avery didn’t say it, but I know him and his pride says this, “See how good the Mavs are without me.  Let’s see if the next coach will win 60, 67, and 51 wins and make the NBA Finals.”

Avery Johnson did not want to trade Devin Harris for Jason Kidd.   He didn’t say it, but he said “Devin was like a son to me.  He’s my second son.”

Read the tea leaves…this was a move Dirk Nowitzki wanted.  It was a move Mark Cuban wanted and Avery played the good solider.

Avery wants to leave things on a high note but he needed to leave.  He said it was time to go.  I know his message got stale in the Mavs locker room.   He’s not the first coach to have that happen.  Pat Riley lost his job with the Lakers in the same fashion.

We’ve seen it go down in Dallas-Fort Worth before, remember Buck Showalter of the Texas Rangers?

“Control freaks” are what we call them.

Avery will get another job.  He will be fine.
