RANGERS OUTFIELDER JOSH HAMILTON NAMED
AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR MAY
Hamilton also Took April Honors; First A.L. Player Ever to Win April and May Awards in a Season
Arlington, Texas – Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has been named the American League Player of the Month for May in an announcement made today by Major League Baseball. Hamilton also won the American League Award for April, as he is the first American League player in the history of the monthly honors (beginning 1974) to win the award in the first two months of a season.
Hamilton is the first player to win the award twice in a season since New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez won it twice last year (April and June). He is the first player to win consecutive monthly awards since Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard in August and September of 2006, the first to accomplish the feat in the American League since Alex Rodriguez with the Rangers in July and August of 2002.
In the 35 years since the American and National Leagues began these monthly awards in 1974, Hamilton is just the fourth player ever to take the honors in both April and May, the first two months of a season. He is the first player in the American League to do it, and the first to pull the trick overall since 1998. He joins senior circuit players Eric Davis (Cincinnati, 1987), Bobby Bonilla (Pittsburgh, 1988), and Mark McGwire (St. Louis, 1998) as the only individuals ever to win player of the month honors in both April and May.
Hamilton joins Alex Rodriguez (August and September of 2002) as the only Rangers ever to win the award in consecutive months in one season. Other than Hamilton and Alex Rodriguez, the only other Texas player to win the award multiple times in one season (non-consecutive) was Rafael Palmeiro in 1999. Hamilton becomes just the sixth player ever to win the award multiple times in a career with the Rangers, joining Rafael Palmeiro (3 times), Alex Rodriguez (3), Ivan Rodriguez, Juan Gonzalez, and Ruben Sierra (twice each).
Hamilton batted .322 (37-115) with 8 home runs, 29 RBI, 22 runs, and 6 doubles in May. He led the American League in RBI and total bases (71) in May, tied for the league lead in home runs, ranked tied for 2nd in runs and extra-base hits (16), 3rd in slugging (.617) and hits (37), and had the 8th-highest average among players with 100-or-more at-bats.
Entering today’s games, Hamilton leads the major leagues with 63 RBI this season, 13 more than the next-closest player. He also leads the American League in home runs (15), total bases (144), extra-base hits (34), slugging (.613), hits (77), and multi-hit games (25). His .328 average ranks 3rd in the league, just 2 points behind the leader in that category.
Hamilton will receive a trophy in addition to yet another Sharp AQUOS® television for winning the award.
