Roy Williams Opens Up

Is Cowboys safety Roy Williams overrated? Roy gives me his take on those who are calling him overrated and say he can’t cover NFL wide receivers.

Check out my Star-Telegram column this Saturday on Roy.

Bill Parcells leaving the Cowboys is going to be a plus in my opinion. He was an average coach in Big D and didn’t take advantage of certain players skills.

Newdawg’s Movie Picks

I get to watch movies after they hit DVD.

Blood Diamond is a must watch. It’s about the conflicts diamonds are causing in Africa. The film is brillant.

Forrest Whittaker won the Oscar for Best Actor in the movie The Last King of Scotland. He must be tremendous because Leo DiCaprio gave a darn good performance in Blood Diamond.

Better than he was in the Best Picture, The Departed.

I finally saw Office Space. Let me put it this way, I’m glad it was a free rental. Jennifer Anniston is in the movie. She’s a good looking lady but a lot of her movies are average.

I just started watching The Pursuit of Happyness. Yes, they spell it with a “Y”. Watch the film and you’ll know in the first scene.

Rick Barnes To Kentucky?

This is the guy for the Wildcats. Rick Barnes.

Rick Pitino says he’s staying at Louisville. John Calipari has re-upped at Memphis and the Aggies are expected to give Billy G a raise to stay at Texas A&M.

Barnes can bring in top talent. He did it at Providence and at Texas.

I think Barnes is getting tired of the lack of sellouts in Austin…and the backseat the hoops program takes to football.

This is Rick’s chance to be THE MAN. Mack Brown is THE MAN at Texas.

Brown left North Carolina because basketball was always going to be #1.

Barnes knows Texas basketball will never be #1. He saw Kelvin Sampson leave Oklahoma for Indiana basketball. Sampson was good for the Sooners, but it’s a football program. The state of Indiana is all about basketball.

So look for Barnes to end his 9 year run at Texas and take his act to the Bluegrass of Kentucky.

Joe Theismann Is Out On MNF

Thank you ESPN. They fired Joe Theismann from Monday Night Football.

3 hours of Joe is waaaaaaaay too much for me and the rest of the world.

ESPN plans to put Joey T on some other cooked up broadcast. Word on the street is they asked Bill Parcells to take the job but he turned it down.

Now Ron Jaworski joins Mike Tirico and Tony Kornheiser in the booth.

Joe came across as pompus and arrogant on Monday Night Football. He was that way on Sunday Night Football.

I do think Joe is good in short interviews, but I can’t take him on games.

Cowboys Open At Home

The NFL released part of the schedule.

The Cowboys will host the N.Y. Giants September 9th at Texas Stadium.

NBC 5 will have the game. Right on time!!!

This will be the best time to catch the Giants. The will be playing their first game since Tiki Barber called it quits.

This is a game the Cowboys have to win. They have to. It’s gonna be hot, humid, and they need to bring the heat on Eli Manning.

Wade Phillips can make a statement right off the bat as the Cowboys head coach.

You want to start the season 1-0 with a NFC East win in the bag.

I’m Sick…. Carolina Lost

Carolina Basketball is my last true sports passion.

I haven’t been ruined by it, or gotten too close it. I’m a fan through and through.

Sunday’s 10 point choke job hurt. I felt like Florida Evans in the episode of Good Times when her husband James dies and she said, “Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn!”

Losing to Georgetown in the Regional Final was terrible but losing kid who dressed up as the Rameses mascot was worse.

Jason Ray performed as the mascot. He died from injuries Monday after getting hit by a car before the Tar Heels Sweet 16 win.

Bad weekend for the Tar Heel faithful.

Mock Draft Thoughts

Mock drafts are all around. Catch my column Saturday in the Star-Telegram.

Hammer Time

The Hammer has landed!!

Ken Hamlin signed a one year deal with the Cowboys for 2.5 million.

Nice job. The club still needs to draft another player at that position.

Hamlin played 4 seasons in Seattle and has an offseason home in Houston.

Roy Williams should be happy. Finally, a guy who can help him out at the free safety spot.

Kentucky Hoops Needs A Coach

Tubby Smith was smart to get out of Kentucky. The school had to give him 1.5 million as a loyalty bonus.

Bottom line, it wasn’t fun anymore for him and the fans and administration turned on him. They old adage is after seven years at a school you’re making more enemies than you are friends.

Now UK and go find somebody else to deal with their crazy and unrealistic fan base.

Rick Barnes of Texas would be my choice, if I were AD Mitch Barnhardt I’d try like the dickens to hire him. Barnes would be wise to stay in Austin where he has a life.

John Calipari would be the best fit, if Rick Pitino turns them down. Pitino says he’s happy at Louisville, but you can never take him at his word…he’s too much of a New York slickster.

Billy G would leave the Aggies for the job. He has no loyalty to anybody. He doesn’t owe the Aggies anything. They gave him a shot and he gave them the best hoops in the last 50 years.

Andy Dalton… Frogs QB of the Future

TCU is in spring practice right now. They need to replace QB Jeff Ballard.

Redshirt Freshman Andy Dalton looks like the real deal. I saw him running with the first team and his arm strength will push him to a starting role when the Frogs host Baylor September 1st.

What about Marcus Jackson? MJ led the Frogs to a win in Waco to open the 2006 season when Ballard went out with a concussion near the end of the first half.

Jackson has experience and is a sophomore. Dalton is red shirt freshman.

My gut tells me Dalton will be the guy. He’s got the best arm I’ve seen in Ft. Worth in my 8 years over covering the Frogs.
