Not Gary Matthews!

I hope Gary Matthews Junior is not a steroid user. Last year he made the All Star team and turned a career year offensively into a 5-year 50 million dollar contract.

GMJ is being linked to a steroids ring that took orders online. He is allegedly a customer. He has never failed a MLB drug test.

Sad, if it’s true.

Betting On The Rangers

Since the Stars and Kings made a trade today, it gave me the chance to speak with my good buddy, Jeff Moeller of the Kings PR staff.

I bet him the Rangers would win the AL West. He took the Angels.

The loser has to buy a steak dinner.

Big Smooth Lives

I met Sam Perkins last night for the first time.

It was at the Barnes & Noble for John Amaechi’s book signing and there was Big Smooth.

Perkins came by wish Amaechi well. Classy move.

He still has a home in North Dallas and is doing some work for the NBA.

Perkins was a 1st round draft pick of the Mavs in 1984. He’s one of the greatest Tar Heels in UNC hoops history.

So Long Cotton Bowl…

Nice job by the folks in Dallas. The Cotton Bowl Classic is moving to Arlington for the 2010 game.

The Orange Bowl game left the Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami years ago, now the Cotton Bowl Classic officials have followed suit.

Outside of Texas the game is not respected by college teams. In 1998, I covered a UCLA team that begged and pleaded the Sugar Bowl to take them. They ended up playing in the Cotton Bowl and fans just decided not to come. The players weren’t excited about playing in Dallas.

The folks in Houston were trying to steal the game for Reliant Stadium.

The Cotton Bowl Stadium is too old to host a major bowl game.

Everyone knows the weather in Dallas is unpredictable in January. The 10 AM start in the cold is brutal.

The new Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington will have a roof, suites, and it’s the type of stadium that is need to get into the BCS Bowl rotation. That is the goal.

Once the Cotton Bowl gets into the BCS rotation they will matter again.

Smart move by the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association Board of Directors to move the game. They do a tremendous job, now they get a proper facility to host the game. The Classic will now go to the next level.

Scratch That, No Need For Pacman

OK, I take back that Pacman Jones to the Cowboys in a trade.

I just read some of the details reported by a N.Y. paper on Jones’ part in a shooting of a stripclub manager who will never walk again.

I won’t go into the sad details, but Pacman Jones is not a guy Jerry Jones needs to have on his team.

Jones didn’t shoot the manager, but allegedly the shooter was apart of Pacman’s group who entered a Vegas strip joint in the wee hours of the morning during the NBA All Star Weekend.

He’s pleading ignorant, but the club says they have the shooter on tape arriving with Jones to the club, Minxx. Jones is being questioned by local authorities.

Pacman was throwing around money at the club. Apparently he didn’t want the women to have the money. He allegedly punched a stripper, after grabbing her hair. I don’t think Pacman puts the “gentleman” in gentlemen’s club.

Yeah, a guy like that doesn’t need to be on the loose late at night in Dallas. Let the Cowboys draft a corner instead.

I’m glad I stayed DFW.

Pacman To Cowboys

I’m starting a rumor right now…. Pacman Jones to the Cowboys.

Tennessee is trying to trade their troubled cornerback. Jones is nothing but trouble and the worst kind of character… BUT he can play some D and special teams.

Profootballtalk.com says Pacman can be had for a 3rd pick. The Cowboys could use a corner if they move Anthony Henry to free safety.

Then they can draft an offensive lineman in the first round.

Brady Quinn Makes A Bad Move

Here’s Brady Quinn… falling like a rock in the eyes of NFL draft gurus and what does he do at the combine?

Announce he’s not going to do any drills? Quinn should work out.

His excuse, “We have a pro day coming up. I’ll work out then”.

The Notre Dame QB never won a bowl game. He looked terrible in the Sugar Bowl loss to LSU. The combine was the place to shut people up.

The Cleveland Browns have the 3rd pick in the draft, Quinn should do all he can to impress the Browns as well as the Raiders who hold the top selection.

Last year, Jay Cutler worked out and the kid from Vandy went from a possible 2nd round pick to a 1st rounder to Denver. Quinn is hurting himself by not showing his skills in front of all 32 teams.

Now Adrian Peterson is smart. The Oklahoma running back is going to workout. His 40 time will set the pace. I can see him going 2nd to Detroit or 3rd to the Browns.

Heat In Town

The Mavs play the NBA Champion Heat Thursday night in Dallas.

Mavs fans will boo the Heat but it won’t change the fact that the last time they played in Dallas, Shaq and company won the NBA Finals.

Mavs players and fans can’t replay it. Another win won’t validate anything. Sure it may make them feel better, but the rings are in South Beach. The banner hangs in South Florida.

The Mavs will pass out 20-thousand Dirk MVP T-shirts. They are grey and the team wants everyone to put the T-shirt on during the game. The Heat has everyone wear white during the playoffs. Seems like they are trying to re-create a playoff atmosphere, which is not needed.

It’s about trying to win a title… this year for the Mavs.

Dallas has the best record in the NBA. The Heat are 26-26. We know who should win.

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday. I don’t expect the Mavs to do anything major. Maybe deal for Eddie Najera or P.J. Brown. I don’t consider those major deals because neither player would be a starter or 6th man.

Turner Hired By Chargers

Is A.J. Smith smarter than Jerry Jones?

The Chargers G.M. is making a living off of Jones’ decisions. Go back to the 2005 draft, The Cowboys took DeMarcus Ware at 11, the Chargers took Shawne Merriman with the next pick.

Later in the first round, Dallas selected Marcus Spears at 20, the Chargers took Luis Castillo a few picks later.

Ware is good, but Merriman has been great. Spears has to show something in 2007 or he’ll be labeled a bust. Castillo is a critical part of the Chargers defense.

Now Smith hired the head coach Jones wouldn’t, Norv Turner.

Here Come The Stars

I gave the Stars up for dead two weeks ago.

Here they are, just one point behind San Jose for second place in the Pacific Division.

I dobut they’ll catch Anahiem to win the division, but we know the NHL Playoffs are unpredicitable. The top seeds (Red Wings and Stars) got bounced in the first round last year.

I still think Marty Turco will be the man to get it done for the Stars in the pipes, if not, Turco will probably be playing for a new team next season.
