Weekend Picks

The Cowboys will beat the Titans, but take the Titans to cover at (+9).

I like the Bears at home (-3) in a battle of unbeatens against Seattle.

Give me the Panthers (-7) in a must win against the Saints in Charlotte.

I’ll go with the underdog Red Raiders (-2) at Texas A&M.

#1 ranked Ohio State won’t cover at Iowa (+6 1/2).

Cal will beat up (-9 1/2) the Oregon State Beavers.

T.O. Killed My Vacation

I wasn’t happy T.O. killed my vacation day on Wednesday.

I had kid duty when my wife called me and said T.O. tried to kill himself.

Be sure to read tommorrow’s Star-Telegram for my column on this very subject. If you miss it, I will post it on my website as I do all my columns.

On another note, I went to the TCU-BYU game Thursday night. The Cougars came with redemption on their mind for last year’s fourth quarter choke and laid it on the 15th ranked Frogs in their house, 31-17.

TCU has got to find a way to get their running game going if they are to repeat as Mountain West champs. The offense has not scored enough points four games into the season.

T.O. Wants To Play Sunday

T.O. wants to play on Sunday in Nashville. He’s got a broken finger. Can he take the pain? Can he catch the football?

Terry Glenn has a hand injury as well. This is a game the Cowboys can’t blow. They must win it. The Titans are one of four 0-3 football teams on their schedule.

T.O. Take

When my wife called me this morning and said turn on the TV I was surprised by what I read on ESPN.

“Terrell Owens attempts Suicide” was the headline.

My first thought was T.O. doesn’t seem like the type to kill himself. I don’t know T.O. on a personal level. I’ve had just three one on one conversations with him.

The police say he tried to end his life. TO and his publicist say he didn’t. So who’s lying? I don’t know.

All I know is this is a distraction for a team that is trying to get ready to play a football game on Sunday. This is no way to prep for the Tennessee Titans.

It’s been two months and look at all the circus T.O. has brought to the Cowboys.

Cowboys-Redskins Thoughts

Let’s give Drew Bledsoe credit. He got the job done in the 27-10 win. The Cowboy receivers and tight ends had the cases of dropsy’s all night long.

TO had four alone, but the guy was playing with a broken right finger. He’s out 2-4 weeks.

Now it’s good TO missed so much time in Oxnard with that hamstring problem. Young players like Sam Hurd and Jamaica Rector got lots of playing time with Drew Bledsoe and the first unit during camp because of it.

Bledsoe threw 2 touchdown passes but more importantly, he threw no picks.

Sometimes it’s the mistakes you don’t make that are the difference in the game. Just look at Mark Brunell, his interception killed the Redskins chances to tie the game and keep the momentum in the 3rd quarter.

The Tony Romo talk is done for now. The Cowboys have a bye week and you better get Terry Glenn for your fantasy team. Make that trade right now for TG.

The Cowboys defense was outstanding. They didn’t allow Washington to score a touchdown. Greg Ellis is adjusting to playing linebacker very well. He’s making the first round pick of Bobby Carpenter look silly after 2 games.

BTW, why did the Redskins pay Al Saunders head coach money to be the offensive coordinator? Joe Gibbs became a Hall of Fame coach calling his own plays. Why did he need Saunders?

Dan Snyder just keeps wasting money. You’ll see Jason Campbell before the season ends. Mark Brunell looks done. He hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass this year.

Weekend Picks

Great college games this week. Get the remote. 7 big time ranked college football games.

Last week I was 3-3 versus the spread. I lost the Cowboys game. 0-1 picking the Boys this year.

Here we go:

TCU over 1 point favorite Texas Tech in a battle of top 25 teams.

USC is a 18 1/2 point favorite over Nebraska. SC is the pick at home.

Tennessee burned me last week against Air Force. I’ll take the Gators and 3 1/2 to go into Knoxville and get a win.

I’ll take the Colts (-13) at home against Houston.

The Dolphins (-6 1/2) will use the South Florida heat and beat the Bills.

And I’ll go with the Cowboys…again. They are 6 point favorites against the Redskins Sunday night at Texas Stadium.

Whitney, Bobby and TCU

Can anybody stay married anymore! Whitney Houston has filed for divorce from singer Bobby Brown.

Sounds like Tech and TCU. The two teams got a divorce from the Southwest Conference back in the 90’s. Tech moved on to the Big 12 and TCU has just been moving around. The WAC, Conference USA, and now the Mountain West.

I expect plenty of hate Saturday in Ft. Worth. The game is a sellout.

I’ll be there. I expect to see lots of hate between the schools. It was that way in Waco two weeks ago when TCU played Baylor.

Lots of four letter words from the students at the faith based institutions.

Newy’s Weekend Picks

I’m going to Austin for the Texas-Ohio State game. #1 vs. #2.

The top ranked Buckeyes are two and a half point dogs to Texas. The Horns have the nations longest winning streak.

I don’t like a red-shirt freshman (Colt McCoy) making his second college start against Ohio State. I don’t like the fact the Horns best corner, Tarell Brown, has been suspended for the game.

Ohio State will have issues in the fourth quarter. They are not used to the Texas heat. I do believe it will have an effect on them later in the contest.

Last year’s contest was an epic and Vince Young led the way. I’ll take Ohio State to cover the spread in this one. The reason, quarterback Troy Smith.

Here they are:

Ohio State covers against Texas. The Horns are 2 & half point favorites.

Tennessee over Air Force. The Vols are 20 point favorites.

LSU takes out Arizona. The Tigers are 15 point favs.

My NFL picks are as follows:

Philly (-5) over Houston

Saints will lose in Cleveland (-3)

And the Cowboys cover in Jacksonville (2)

NBC Is Back In The NFL

The NFL is back on NBC!!!

The Dolphins had a 17-14 lead in the 4th quarter and couldn’t hold on. The World Champs came up with big plays, just like they did in their last game…a win in Super Bowl XL.

Charlie Batch threw a 87-yard touchdown to tight end Heath Miller. That made it 21-17 Pittsburgh.

Daunte Culpepper really struggled. He missed receivers. You could tell he had happy feet early in the game and missed two chances for touchdown passes.

I wonder if Carson Palmer will struggle like that in the Bengals opener.

Both QB’s are coming back from knee injuries.

NFL Prediction

I’ll pick the Cowboys to win 10 games. 11 games if Julius Jones rushes for 1,200 yards.

I won’t give you a Super Bowl pick because I really don’t want to read the angry emails when I’m wrong…again.
