Former Dallas Cowboy Pro Bowler Gets Degree

I always liked La Roi Glover when he played defensive tackle for the Cowboys.  Too bad he got run off by Bill Parcells for the Tuna’s pet Jason Ferguson, who was absolutely a bust in Big D.

Glover is now in St. Louis.  He recently went back to school to earn his college degree in Public Adminstration.  As a six time Pro Bowler, he’s got a boatload of cash in the bank.

He told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,  “Now that I have three children, it was important for me to show them … the importance of going back and getting it.”

Jason Witten of the Cowboys recently got his college degree from Tennessee.  It’s good to see players understand the importance of a degree and the message it sends to kids and fellow players.

Boston Globe Legend Slices Up Bill Beli-cheat

Bob Ryan writes what he feels.  I had a great talk with him at the Final Four about why it was a mistake for Boston College to leave the Big East for the ACC.

Well the longtime Boston Globe legend brings the heat and truth to why Bill Belichick is hated and why the organization will remain so as long has he is the head coach:

“The sports community now associates the Patriots with cheating. The three Super Bowl championships are, and forever will be, under suspicion. The thought will never go away.”

Ryan does a great job in crafting a piece of why Belichick does what he does:

The rest of the world only knows that Bill Belichick thought he was above the law.

What we have here is a football version of Watergate.

“Bill Belichick is Richard Nixon. Brilliant. Tormented. Paranoid. Controlling. Highly suspicious of the media.

Watergate was overkill. There was no need for it. Like, was Richard Nixon ever really in danger of losing the 1972 election to George McGovern? Spygate was likewise unnecessary. Belichick was, and is, a great football coach. Why did he not trust his own genius to win games honestly, especially after winning his first Super Bowl? Was he that obsessed with victory? Weren’t all those hours staring at tapes enough? Did he think he had a divine right to victory? Clearly, something was churning inside that head.”

Look you have to read this if you love football and good writing.

Why Players and Coaches HATE The Media

John Tomase of the Boston Herald wanted to break the story.

He wanted to break the story that the New England Patriots videotaped the St. Louis Rams walk through practice before Super Bowl XXXVI.

Tomase broke the story…but it was a lie.   He was wrong and has ruined his name in sports crazy Boston.   His name is trash in the Patriots organization.

He tries to explain his actions, but in my mind, it just goes to show you want athletes and coaches hate the sports media.

It is a must read.

Rick Gosselin’s Final Mock Draft

Newdawg blog readers know I’m a big time fan of Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News.

Goose is a tremendous writer and he talks to all the teams.  One day I had him on NBC 5 and he had spoken to five NFL GM’s that day.

He’s got the Cowboys taking a running back and a corner in the first round.   Click for the entire mock draft.

Felix Jones of Arkansas and Brandon Flowers of Virginia Tech.

Please Take Jonathan Stewart At Pick 22

For all my Dallas Cowboys fans, put me down for Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart if he is available when they draft at 22.

He is a big back at 235 pounds who can do it all.

Think of it this way, the Cowboys can erase the mistake of passing on Steven Jackson a few years ago.  I think the St. Louis Rams came out OK on that draft pick.

Stewart is injured right now (toe) but he should be OK according to this ESPN.com article.

Another former personnel man thinks Stewart is worth of a top ten selection.

So I hope Jerry Jones goes Stewart at 22 then take corner at 28.

Hiding Roy will be difficult this season

Posted on Sat, Apr. 19, 2008

Special to the Star-Telegram

This is a make-or-break season for Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams.

He might be the only man who has started in the Pro Bowl who has so many questions about his role in his organization. Some people at Valley Ranch don’t trust him on the field anymore.

Don’t be surprised if Williams is benched on third downs this fall. Teams love throwing to the tight end on third down to keep the chains moving.

Did you see the Cowboys’ schedule? It is loaded with some tough tight ends. Williams has struggled in pass coverage the past two seasons. Badly.

The Cowboys open in Cleveland. That means Williams will have to cover Pro Bowler Kellen Winslow. The Browns would be foolish not to try to isolate Winslow on him.

Some of the best tight ends in the game are on the schedule this year: Chris Cooley (Redskins), Jeremy Shockey (Giants), Todd Heap (Ravens).

Randy McMichael of the Rams has been a Pro Bowl alternate.

Vernon Davis was the 49ers’ second-leading receiver.

The Buccaneers’ tight end duo of Alex Smith and Jerramy Stevens combined for seven touchdown receptions.

Heath Miller of the Steelers caught seven touchdown passes in ‘07, and Donald Lee of the Packers snagged six.

Philly’s L.J. Smith will get two shots at the Cowboys’ strong safety. Ben Utecht of the Bengals is no slouch.

Seattle is the only team on the schedule that is weak at the tight end position.

Williams knows he’s not the same player he was a few years ago. His ears work. He knows the critics are out there.

He did himself no favors in the locker room last year by being suspended for a horse collar tackle on Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. Wade Phillips also chose not to start him for two games. He didn’t register a single sack in 2007.

The fifth straight Pro Bowl trip to Hawaii came to him because he was the first alternate and was chosen to replace the late Sean Taylor on the NFC roster.

Dump that No. 31 jersey, because he’s going back to the No. 38 he donned at Oklahoma. The old No. 38 was a feared man who made plays and made hard hits.

When Cowboys training camp opens in Oxnard, Calif., lots of eyes will be on Williams to see if he can return to his once dominating form. His career as a Cowboy depends on it.

Newy Scruggs is the sports director at NBC 5.
