Peter King On Jerry Jones Trading For #1 Draft Pick

These days I don’t agree with Sports Illustrated’s Peter King too often, but he got this one right in his MMQB about Jerry Jones and the rumor he wants to get the #1 pick in the draft to take Arkansas running back Darren McFadden:

I think my advice is short and sweet for Jerry Jones, who, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, is pondering trading up to get the first pick in the draft so he can take Arkansas running back Darren McFadden.

Don’t even consider making such a foolish trade. That’s right. It’s foolish. Never, ever, ever, ever pay a ransom for a running back. They’re too plentiful and too easy to find down the line, and too easy to make a mistake picking. As the Bears have proven (Curtis Enis, Rashaan Salaam, Cedric Benson in the first round between 1995 and 2005), picking backs is a dartboard science.

In the last two years, eight backs drafted after the first round have gained 1,200 yards — Frank Gore, Tiki Barber, Willie Parker, Rudi Johnson, Brian Westbrook, Chester Taylor, Travis Henry and Clinton Portis. The Giants picked up Ryan Grant off the street, and he just helped win a playoff game for Green Bay against Seattle.

And to think of including restricted free-agent Marion Barber III in the deal … lunacy. Pure and simple. Barber’s a top-10 NFL running back right now (the only reason he might not be in the top five is he hasn’t proven he can carry it 20 times a game every week; he’s had 339 carries over the past two years). Under no circumstances should he be dealt. If I’m Bill Parcells and can give you the first pick in the draft for Barber and first- and second-round picks, I make that trade this morning.

Here’s What Happened To Coach Fran

The Aggies sent Dennis Franchione packing last year. So the man who was hailed when he took the gigs at Alabama and Texas A&M is a has been in 2008.

Sad but true details of Fran’s ambitions and selfishness. Here’s sample from the KC Star.

“He just burns too many bridges,” says Tyler Watts, the former Alabama quarterback. “At some point, you build a track record. People stop believing what you’re saying. He is not as concerned with the welfare of the players as he is of the welfare of Dennis Franchione.”

The Next Moose Johnston

They Cowboys have not gotten the fullback position right since Moose Johnston retired.

Take a look at a guy who I’d like to see in a Cowboys uniform. A big kid from West Virginia named Owen Schmitt who ESPN.com featured.

Sooner fans know him VERY well from the Fiesta Bowl.

Senior Bowl Thoughts

I taped the Senior Bowl and I’ve watched it. Here’s my take on players.

Sedrick Ellis-DT USC
This kid is really good. Caused a safety and was just disruptive. A guy the Cowboys would love to have, but he won’t last past the first five draft picks.

Andre Woodson-QB Kentucky
He didn’t seem comfortable all week in practice or in the game. I don’t see him as a first round pick. He can play in the league, but may need to ride the pine for a year to learn the game like Steve McNair and Carson Palmer did.

Dominique Rogers Cromartie-CB Tennessee St.
Darn good player and one the Cowboys need to bring in and workout. He made a super pick in the game and he can tackle. I like him a lot. His cousin is the outstanding corner for the Chargers, Antonio Cromartie

Joe Flacco-QB Delaware
Everyone is right, big time arm on this guy. At 6-6 he is the prototype, but he’s not a guy I see the Cowboys taking in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Ledois McKelvin-CB Troy
I’d love to see the Cowboys draft this kid in the first round. He’s got return skills they can use on special teams as well. A hamstring hurt him on game day, but he’s week of practice was right on time.

Wesley Woodyard-LB Kentucky
The Wildcats leading tackler last year. He can operate in space and made a super stop on a 3rd and 1 in that situation. He’s the kind of player the Cowboys could use.

Chad Henne-QB Michigan
He threw a TD pass in the game. Henne can play in the NFL. He will be a 2nd round pick. I think he’ll play in the league for 7 to ten years. He would be perfect for Seattle. I guy to groom behind Matt Hasslebeck.

Matt Forte-RB Tulane
Ran for a bunch of yards at Tulane. He’d be a great backup for Marion Barber III. Forte can also catch the football.

Harry Douglas-WR Louisville
The broadcast team loved the guy. I liked the way he caught the ball and he can pull away. Trent Dilfer said he’d be an excellent 3rd down slot guy. That won’t work in Dallas, they just signed Patrick Crayton to keep doing that.

Adarius Bowman-WR Oklahoma State
Looks like Tarzan, drops passes like Jane. His talent reminds you of Terrell Owens and so do his drops. He is very interesting, but don’t expect him to make much of an impact his first year. He got robbed of a TD pass in the game. His height is 6-4.

Jacob Hester-FB LSU
Jason Garrett should stand on a table for this guy. All he does is make plays and he can catch something, Oliver Hoyt and Deon Anderson are still not good at.

Tashard Choice-RB Ga. Tech
The former Sooner can catch the ball and I think he would be a good backup to Barber in Dallas. I thought he ran tough in the Senior Bowl. I’d like to see more him and Forte.

Cowboys Draft - A Running Back I Like

I will find and bring you some of the best talent I think the Cowboys should take a hard look at for this upcoming NFL Draft.

I’m big on East Carolina running back Chris Johnson. This kid ripped it up in his bowl game, the Hawaii Bowl.

ECU, the same school that produced Jacksonville Jags quarterback David Garrard, won that bowl game against Boise State with 223 yards of rushing from Johnson. He finished with 408 all-purpose yards in the game.

The Cowboys could use him to be a backup to Marion Barber III. Johnson had 36 kick returns for over one thousand yards and a touchdown. Gotta like that.

Johnson is 5-11 and 195 pounds. USA Today profiled him before the Senior Bowl

Vince Young Goes Back To School

2006 NFL Rookie of the Year, Vince Young, is back at Texas to finish his college degree.

Young plays for the Titans. He’s teammate in college and in Tennessee, Michael Griffin has also enrolled on the 40 acres.

USA Today picked up the story.

Weird Al Is Back

The Oakland Raiders need to get rid of Al Davis.

Today, ESPN is reporting Weird Al sent a letter of resignation to head coach Lane Kiffin to sign.

Huh???

That old man is nuts. Kiffin is coaching in the Senior Bowl on Saturday.

Kiffin led the Raiders to a 4-12 mark in his 1st season.

Just when you think Jerry Jones is running a circus, Weird Al shows who’s the best ringmaster in the NFL.

Dennis Green could be the replacement in Oakland if Kiffin is fired.

Jessica Simpson Fires Back & Was Romo Cheating?

Local faux singer Jessica Simpson is mad at OK magazine for reporting she was being dumped by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

Jess is ready to sue the tabloid.

Report: Jessica Says There’s B.S. in OK!

Even better….Romo was “reportedly” cheating on Simpson with an old flame and might be ready to get married. Guess Romo stopped listening to Carrie Underwood’s hit tune “Before He Cheats”.

Read more of the scoop.

Man, who knew the police chief’s wife was a criminal. She’s got a thing for boys who play hockey.

This is a poor copy-cat of Stiffler’s Mom.

Todd Grantham New D-Line Coach

After directing the 30th best defense in the NFL, Todd Grantham was fired by Cleveland.

Can’t blame Romeo Crennel for that move.

Now he will coach the Cowboys defensive line.

Grantham goes back a few years with current Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart. They served as defensive assistants in Houston in 2002 and 2003.

They dealt the Cowboys their worst loss in franchise history. The expansion Texans beat the Cowboys in their first ever NFL regular season game.
